IPL  For  chalazion

IPL (INTENSE PULSED LIGHT) Non-surgical treatment  for  chalazion

Picture
Chalazia are a result of chronic inflammation in the eyelids, particularly from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) or blepharitis. When the glands aren't functioning normally, they are prone to closure and a firm, tender nodule may form in the eyelid. They can be quite uncomfortable, and are definitely unsightly! Traditional treatments for a chalazion, and their infected cousins known as a stye or hordeolum, are a combination of hot compresses and eyelid scrubs.
These treatments are designed to help open the oil glands, reduce inflammation, and gradually the bump resolves. But this can take weeks and aren't always effective. For chronic, non-resolving nodules, more invasive treatments can be performed, including injecting the lesion with a steroid, or incision/drainage: both not the most pleasant of experiences for patients!

For chronic, non-resolving nodules, more invasive treatments can be performed, including injecting the lesion with a steroid, or incision/drainage: both not the most pleasant of experiences for patients!

This treatment, which involves a series of light-based treatments to the skin around the eyes, helps dry eye sufferers by reducing abnormal blood vessels (telangectasias) around the eyelids that secrete inflammation-producing chemicals, improving meibomian gland function, and reducing bacterial load around the eyes. The end result: more tears, a healthier tear composition, and less dry eye symptoms for most.
While results may vary, in our experience, we have found IPL treatments to be equally as effective (80-90% resolution) compared to more invasive options such as steroid injections or incision & drainage.

As always, treatments are individualized to the unique characteristics of each patient, but having an effective, non-invasive option has been a game-changer for our patients.
